In addition, we can offer other services to enhance your text or presentation.
Copy editing/cutting
Translations into most European languages are typically 20-30% longer than the English original. If the translation needs to fit the same space as the original text, this means that either the source text or the translation will have to be cut. Particularly where an English text is to be translated into several languages, it can be easier and offer a more uniform translation if the English source text is cut first. We can offer this service in-house, checking the cut text with you if you wish.
Proofreading
If your text to be translated from English is also for publication in English, it will of course have been fully proof-read and sub-edited. However, it never hurts to have a fresh eye cast over it! We always read through English texts in house before sending them out to translators, so if you wish we can send you any proofreading corrections we note in the original English. Please let us know if you wish us to do this - we will not charge for this service.
Advice on presentation
In material for publication, content which is appropriate in one country or language may not be appropriate in another. This applies particularly to images. For example, in the UK a photograph of barristers wearing wigs and gowns is immediately recognisable as a reference to a legal context; in other European countries, where lawyers do not wear wigs, it would not have the same connotations. Through our translators and our in-house staff, we have the expertise to advise you on these issues. Our translators can also offer advice on, for example, the most appropriate hyperlinks to insert into your document for a particular country or language context, whether a graphic will need to be altered to make it readable, and standard practice for headlines, bylines and layout in publications in the language in question. Again, we are happy to offer this service free of charge as part of our overall integrated service.
Glossary
If you regularly have material specific to your company translated, you may want to build up your own glossary of standard translations of specific terms or phrases. We can do this on the basis of the translations we do for you, checking continually with our translators to ensure that it comprises the most up-to-date and most appropriate terms. A charge will be made for this service.
